Ark Academy was my group’s final for our Game Design class. Similar to Rogue Rescue, we had a month to create this game. A week was spent discussing character designs and finishing up the script. This left me with around 3 weeks to create the main characters. While managing to work on projects for my remaining 4 classes, I made the logo, the three main characters, Kumo, Prometheus, and Chad, with 5 different sprite expressions, two additional side characters, the blue gelatinous cube and little ghost. The characters took between 5-10 hours of work total to complete. With a simple character such as Chad, he had the least amount of work. Kumo, on the other hand, took 10 hours due to her extra limbs and similar details. If I didn’t have other classes to work on and more time with this project, I would have liked to create an entirely new sprite for each facial expression and backgrounds for each scene. (Backgrounds were online assets edited by another teammate.) There weren’t too many problems creating them. The main two were Kumo’s design and creating Chad. I find that I’m much better when it comes to drawing female bodies, but to strengthen my skills for drawing males. Kumo was the first character I’ve drawn that has extra limbs, so I had to figure out the best placement for where the extra 4 arms went and how to position them. However, once the assets were imported into the game, everything began to come together and I was overjoyed with what we were able to produce for such a short time. All art made by me was created using Procreate (iPad).
